In a recent interview, Alternative Energy Development Board CEO Amjad Ali Awan made an announcement that Pakistan has grabbed a position among those countries which are producing more than 1,000 megawatts of electricity through renewable energy sources. Talking to media persons, the CEO said, “Our country has been utilising its wind, power, and biogas resources for clean power.”

Further he said that on the basis of renewable sources of energy, Pakistan had attained1,135 MWs of installed capacity of electricity. The reports have it that this capacity is on way to increase to1,185 MWs by next month by the time the first project of renewable energy under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor using wind power would be installed in Gharo.

According to the reports, of the 1,135 MWs Pakistan has been producing through renewable sources, 590 MWs are wind power-based, 400 MWs solar energy-based, 145 MWs biogas-based available through sugar mills in northern Sindh and southern Punjab.

Mr. Awan revealed the news that Alternative Energy Development Board was on way to plan that the electricity produced through solar power would be increased to 1,756 MWs by the end of year 2018. Further he revealed that after two years’ time, the wind power projects in Pakistan would be producing more than 1000 MWs.

Revealing more, the CEO said that in order to increase biogas-based electricity to 375 MWs, the letters of interest had been issued to four more projects. Mr. Awan then mentioned that by 2019, sugar mills in Pakistan would begin contributing up to 500 MWs electricity to the national grid.

Showing a positive hope, the CEO said that 2019 will bring up the production of 3000 MWs of electricity through renewable energy as its onward supply to the end consumers to be based on a subsidised tariff.
